I found the line across my chest in a photo, not the mirror
It matched the side I've slept on my whole life. I hadn't put those two things together until a friend pointed at the photo and asked what it was.
I always sleep on my right side. I've done it since I was a kid, and I never thought of it as a habit worth changing. Then last summer a friend zoomed into a photo of us on vacation and asked, "what's that line on your chest?" I looked, and there it was, a soft crease running across my décolleté, right where my arm folds against my chest at night.
Once I saw it, I couldn't stop seeing it. Low-cut tops, the front of a swimsuit, even a work video call where the camera angle caught it. I started checking in the mirror every morning, which is a strange thing to admit, and some mornings the line looked deeper than others.
I assumed it was sun damage at first. I'm careful about SPF, so that didn't fully add up, but I didn't know what else it would be.
"I kept treating it like a skincare problem, when it was actually a sleep problem."
I bought a firming serum for the chest area and used it religiously for a couple of months, morning and night. My skin felt fine, soft, hydrated, but the crease didn't move. That's when it clicked that a serum treats the surface. It was never going to undo something that gets pressed back in every single night.
I tried sleeping on my back for about a week. I woke up on my side every single morning anyway. Old habits don't reset because you decide they should.
A soft silicone pad worn overnight, placed over the décolleté before bed. It sits between your skin and the pillow, so the fold that used to press into my chest now presses into the pad instead. No adhesive, no straps, it just clings to the skin on its own.
A coworker mentioned she used something similar and I was skeptical, mostly because I didn't see how anything could survive a full night of me tossing around. My first night, I pressed it on too loosely and woke up with it half off my chest, stuck to the sheet instead.
The second night I pressed it on properly right before turning off the light, smoothing it against clean, dry skin so it had a real seal. I woke up and it was exactly where I'd put it. That was the first morning in a while I didn't go looking for the line in the mirror out of habit.
I didn't notice a dramatic change overnight, and I want to be honest about that. What I noticed was that the crease stopped looking deeper week over week. A few weeks in, the same friend who first pointed it out looked at another photo and didn't say anything, which told me more than any mirror check.
I still sleep on my right side. That part never changed. What changed is what's happening to my skin while I do it.
"I didn't have to retrain how I sleep. I just had to stop the crease from getting pressed back in."
It's a cosmetic pad, not a treatment, and I'm careful not to overstate what it does. Each pad lasts me 15-20 uses if I hand wash it and let it air dry, so I rotate between the two in the set. It's one more small thing before bed, along with washing my face and brushing my teeth.
Five months in now. I still sleep exactly how I always have. I just don't dread the beach photos anymore.
